DG Competition is responsible for competition law and policy, which are regulated by Articles 81, 82 (substantive law – cartels and abuse of dominant position), 82 – 86 of EC Treaty. It also plays a very significant role in enforcement of EU competition law (see Enforcement of Antitrust Law). Recently it has become involved in considering the options for private enforcement, including collective redress – see Collective Redress

DG COMP initiates legislation in the area of competition law and its enforcement based on Article 83 of the Treaty.
