Resource Centre > Key Players > DG Justice

The youngest and smallest of all Commission’s DGs, DG Justice is responsible for coordinating the policy of freedom of movement of persons. See Judicial cooperation in civil and commercial matters for the scope of the DG’s powers in the area of civil justice. The DG also has powers in the area of asylum and immigration, criminal justice, money laundering, organised crime and terrorism.

The DG initiates legislation in the area of civil justice based on Article 65 of the Treaty. It is currently considering the action plan for the next five years: see the Communication of 10 June 09, which sets out the key issues. The Stockholm Plan in the area of Freedom, Security and Justice is going to be debated in the European Parliament, and will be adopted by the European Council in December 2009.

Under the new Commission which took office in February 2010 DG Justice gained additional responsability for areas of consumer protection.
